A Sustainable Start to 2024

Start the year sustainably – here are a few ways to help your business and the planet in 2024.

The new year is an ideal time to embrace positive change and, as Wales takes the lead with ground-breaking environmental laws, businesses are starting to take steps towards a greener future.

However, navigating the path to sustainability can be overwhelming. That’s why we’ve created this go-to resource for all things sustainable, from events to volunteering opportunities, designed to help guide you and your business toward an eco-conscious 2024.

Event: Support for Businesses on the Single Use Plastic Ban at Pettigrew Tearooms – Wednesday 24th January, 3-4.30pm

Last year Wales made a significant step towards a more sustainable future by launching Phase 1 of the Single-Use Plastic Ban. The ban impacts all businesses and organisations in Wales, urging them to make the switch to eco-friendly alternatives.

Ahead of the busy Six Nations, we are offering businesses free, additional advice and guidance on implementing the ban. Join us at Pettigrew Tearooms for an informal chat and support from:

There will also be a selection of tea, homemade cakes and pastries available. Reserve a spot here.

Find out more about the ban and what it means for your business here.

Event: Evidencing Sustainable Practice at Pasture Restaurants – Tuesday 23rd January, 5-7pm

Interested in implementing sustainable practices within your business?

At this free event, chef-owner Sam Elliott will share insights into the ethos and culture at Pasture, who scored exceptionally highly in all three categories assessed by the Sustainable Restaurant Association  (SRA) – environment, sourcing and society – securing them a 3* ‘Food Made Good’ Rating. Pasture’s Head of Culture Alec Browne Wilkinson will share his experience of the accreditation process, and the SRA will be on hand to shed more light on the elements which make up a ‘Food Made Good’ Rating. A welcome drink and canapes will be provided. Reserve a spot.

FOR Cardiff’s Sustainability Hub

The FOR Cardiff Sustainability Hub is a quick and easy way to access sustainability resources and share best practice. With regular posts containing useful resources and opportunities, the hub aims to give businesses guidance and support to become more sustainable. Current posts include:

Businesses can also advertise unwanted office furniture/equipment by submitting their own posts to the hub. Find out how to submit a post here. If your business would like to feature on the hub as a best practice case study, or shout about something sustainable, email nia@forcardiff.com

Sustainable Volunteering

The new year is an excellent opportunity to engage in environmental projects through volunteering. Cardiff has a great range of volunteering opportunities, such as tree planting with Coed Caerdydd or assisting with animals at Forest Farm. Participating in these activities not only positively influences our health and well-being but also brings advantages to businesses that provide paid time off for volunteering, including an improved work ethic and happier, healthier staff. Explore more about these opportunities and their benefits.

Get Ready For the Changes to Recycling

From 6th April 2024 it will become law for all businesses, charities and public sector organisations to sort their waste for recycling. Now is a great time to get ahead and start implementing these changes. The Welsh Government website is full of useful information and guidance for businesses to help you prepare.
