We work with partners to highlight the history, fun, and diversity of Cardiff streets with permanent and temporary installations. Everything we do under this heading will be free to access and focussed on making public art and culture accessible.
Every year we invest in bringing a world first Christmas experience to the city centre to help Cardiff stand out among other competing capitals. This experience is installed for a couple of months, ensuring that footfall is consistently high to benefit our member businesses.
For Christmas 2022, we installed a light and sound installation in St John’s Gardens called the Light of Winter or Goleuni’r Gaeaf in Welsh. The free family-friendly experience was open from November to February 2023 and was promoted by Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden and her partner Lloyd Griffiths.
For Christmas 2023, we installed a light and sound installation in the newly opened Canal Quarter called Illuminated Reeds Symphony. The free family-friendly experience was open from December to February 2024.
For Christmas 2024, in partnership with Christmas at Bute Park, we have brought the state-of-the-art Light of Winter Trail to Cardiff city centre. This illuminated trail of 11 light and sound installations is free to enjoy and runs from 14th November – 5th January 2025.
The trail includes ‘Cardiff Aurora’, a light and sound projection onto Cardiff Central Station that runs from 5pm – midnight every evening, ‘Illuminated Reeds Symphony’, and festive lighting on the entrances to Cardiff’s historic arcades.
You can click here to view and download the trail map, or pick one up from St David’s Dewi Sant guest services desk, Cardiff Castle and Cardiff Central Station.
